Is it hard finding a job in LA nowadays?

Finding a job
. asked:

I’m going to school to be an electrical lineman for DWP of Los Angeles. I’ve came across some sites that claimed that LADWP has a history of discriminatory acts. I’m a black male.

Will it be hard finding a city job because of my race? Is the DWP still involved in discriminatory practices?

I don’t think you’ll have any more trouble getting a city job because of your race. In fact, it seems to be just the opposite. My uncle, a Latino man, was in DWP for decades, and I hung out with a lot of his buddies from time to time. Most people seem to be standup guys. You might find some stupid person in DWP, but you find stupid people everywhere. Frankly, I would go for it. It was a really good gig for my uncle.

I think the bigger issue will be: are they hiring at all? The economy stinks!

The economy in LA is rough.

Your race will not be a problem. The sucky economy will. You may not get hired until the recession has bottomed out.

The public agencies in LA (and all of CA) pretty much all have hiring freezes right now, just like in private industry.
I think even McDonalds isn’t hiring.
Your race is irrelevant if you are qualified– this isn’t Mississippi.

Nope. Pretty much all of California.

Pulling the “race card” is really getting boring. If you have any problems getting hired it is because unemployment in Los Angeles is the highest in decades. Most city agencies have enacted hiring freezes. You will have to blame the economy this time.

    I don’t think so.
