Having a hard time finding the job I want because no experience. Should I make one up? Should I lie?
January 29th, 2009 | by admin |Lets get some shoes asked:
after completing a medical billing cousrse, have having a hard time finding a job because they all want years of exp. Should I put on my resume I worked doing billing before even if this isn’t true?

How else am I supposed to get started?
Has anyone ever done this?

As an employer, don’t lie. You will get caught. When you do get caught, you will be fired. That is an experience that you don’t want or need. Try asking for an internship. Many companies will hire interns (and pay them). You won’t get paid much, but will be able to build experience. You may even find that they recognize your value and offer you a better position within the company. Bottom line, don’t lie. There are better ways to get you to where you want to be. Good luck to you.

perhaps you can tell a white lie which is not really if you say
I have experience doing billing.
IF you say you worked at a job they will want references.
You can try and sell your abilities to them as it is a vicious cycle — how is one to obtain experience if you will not hire them when they have the qualifications for the job.
Tell them that you hope to get years of experience working in their office.
or better yet say “I plan to get years of experience working for them”, that is more firm and assertive.

Particularly in the medical field, lies are easily caught because it will be obvious you do not possess any experience when you start and you will have painted yourself into a corner. Also, in medicine, integrity, accountability and honesty are to be highly regarded and if you lie , even a little, you are demonstrating neither.
I agree, asking to do a working internship or demonstrating a willingness to train (perhaps for lesser pay) is one way; also trying to get a job in a smaller clinic may help where you can talk more to people who can do this for you and to whom you can appeal, rather than just a personel department. Perhaps even taking a slightly different job (front office) to get your foot in the door and lateral over to billing later.
Further, the billing field is getting impacted (too many in some parts) so you will have to be creative & flexible–offer to cross train in the front office or something like that.
