What helps a person stay focused on job hunting?

job hunting
BBNsaga asked:

Job hunting is hard because it seems like everyone is better than me when it comes to doing work. People have such strong opinions and are competitive. I am sick of feeling like I will be a loser when I get the next job. So how do I get over this feeling of intimidation and just find work that I can do and am very willing to do?

I was on a serious job hunt from March-November 2007. I tried EVERYTHING from e-mailing resumes and cover letters from jobs found on Craig’s List to spending 2 days “in the field” going into business and trying to talk with managers about open positions. Over all, I applied to over 300 companies out of those..I landed interviews with 3 and was hired with 1. I have been employed there since November and still don’t think it’s good enough for my current skills and financial needs to I am about to re-enter the job hunt.

Here’s what I learned through the process:

    1. There is absolutely no such thing as job security anymore

    2. Very little people keep the same job and the same company for more than 3-6 years nowadays.

    3. You HAVE to have a plan. I tried a few different ones.

It usually helps if you target a few companies and really focus on them. Research as much about those companies as possible.

Attend any job fairs in your area. I went to one job fair before where I talked with about 20 employers and only landed an interview with one.. however that employer mentioned in the interview that he was impressed how well I was mingling with people in the room.

One tactic I used that wasn’t successful was saying “Send out 50 resumes this week” Power in numbers?

One book that really helped me was Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunters.

What makes you think that everyone is better than you? Surely you have some skills that are desired. Even if you are unskilled and looking for extreme entry-level work, showing that you are committed and determined is important.
