Can anyone provide HONEST answers to my questions about joining the army?

February 22nd, 2009
Elvin asked:

I’m a college grad with a bachelors in computer information systems, CompTIA A+ certified, will be CompTIA Network+ certified in 3 weeks, cant find a job that suits me for crap and I’m now entertaining the idea of enlisting in the army to become an Information Technology Specialist (25B).

i have a few questions. How is it REALLY like once u get to basic training? When I think of basic training I think of freakin jail how your being hounded all the time. What’s it like in AIT and what happens after you’re done? I’m from Brooklyn, NY. I was wondering if it’s possible to request to be stationed in/near NY or do they pretty much tell u to go to Iraq and BOOM ur forced to go? I’m ignorant to army life. how is it like in terms of social life, having fun and so forth? Also, what are the odds of being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan as a college graduate? I don’t know where my job developer heard this from, but she said something about how you’re less likely to be deployed if you have a college education. Sounds fishy to me. Anyways, I hope I can get brutally honest answers from you guys. I don’t wanna be fed only what I want to hear like I probably would from the recruiters.

Thanks guys.
one more question. is it possible to enlist to become an officer AND a 25B or is it just one or the other?

Discouraged on the job hunting front. Should I just work for a temp agency until I find something better?

Judy asked:

I’m a college student looking for a full-time job to pay for my bills and tuition. I’ve been applying everywhere using hotjobs, craigslist, and even applying in person. I’ve never waitressed, and I’m really not into retaill; I want a job that’ll look good on my resume.

So far I’m having little success. I’ve gotten a few interviews, but no job offers. I got an interview as a bank teller, but the position was too far to commute so the Bank Recruiter claims she’s looking for a closer position for me. I’ll believe it when I see it. I’m just getting very discouraged.

Should I just go to a temp agency and hope for the best? I’m not low on cash right now, but I will be unless I can find a job in the next month or so? Maybe my standards are too high…

Should I go out and buy a bunch of new clothes to go job hunting in?

I know the saying “You have to spend money to make money.” But here’s the problem. I am looking for a job because my husband and I are having money problems at the moment. The jobs I had in the past were they kind where I just wore a uniform. Since then I have been a housewife, with no need for dressy type clothing. I have few a seprate pieces that are ok, but none that I feel are really good enough. I live in an area where several large compaines have closed and layed off all their employee’s, jobs are scace. And getting a job here takes an act of God. ( we are military, moving is not an option.) If I spend money for clothes and dont end up finding a job, I will just put us further in debt. Should I do it anyway?
Also with my current skill levels I am probably going back to the casual dress or uniform types jobs again. I guess I should have mentioned that before.

Job hunting is hard because it seems like everyone is better than me when it comes to doing work. People have such strong opinions and are competitive. I am sick of feeling like I will be a loser when I get the next job. So how do I get over this feeling of intimidation and just find work that I can do and am very willing to do?

Does anyone else find job hunting depressing?

I’m not sure what it is about it - maybe the impossibly difficult technical interviews that leave me feeling like an idiot - but it seems that every time I have been hunting for a new development position, I get depressed, and start doubting my abilities. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what do you do to combat those feelings? Any advice is appreciated.
